How can you make change?

When you make change, you count money

Way 1

Count Up to Find the Change

Frank buys flowers for $4.78 and pays with a five dollar bill.  How much change does he get?

Count up from $4.78.

Cost                           

Frank's change is 2 dimes and 2 pennies, or $0.22

 

Way 2
Subtract Cost from Amount Paid

Anna buys a book and CD for $16.43.  She gives the clerk $20.00.  How much change should Anna get?

Anna's change is 3 dollars, 2 quarters, a nickel, and three pennies, or $3.57.
 

Remember:
You can make change by counting up or by subtracting the cost from the amount paid.
